Pupil Absence Request Form & Info

Pupil Absences Request For Exceptional Circumstances

Amendments to the 2006 regulations (2013) make clear that Headteachers may not grant any leave of absence during term time unless there are exceptional circumstances. Parents do not have the automatic right to withdraw pupils from school and, in law, have to apply for permission in advance.  You are required to complete an Pupil Absence Form.

Following advice from the local authority, government guidelines and in line with our policy, we would like to remind you that it is a legal requirement that pupils attend school regularly. We would like to encourage you to think carefully before taking your child out of school unless they are ill or in exceptional circumstances. Every session lost impacts on a pupil’s progress, wellbeing and learning. We always aim for 100% attendance and celebrate this at end of term assemblies. Unauthorised absences will always be scrutinised and monitored and parents may be asked to attend an attendance clinic if necessary. As well as pupil results, the school is judged on its attendance figures by both OfSTED and the local authority. Should you have any questions regarding this matter please do not hesitate to speak to me. Thank you for your cooperation and support on the matter.

Accumulated Absences

Accumulated unauthorised absences of 10 sessions may result in a Fixed Penalty Fine issued directly from North Somerset Council.   1 day = 2 sessions.

Accumulated absences will be referred to our Education Welfare Officer. North Somerset Education Welfare Services are increasingly taking legal action against parents of children with unauthorised absences.  Please note a two week absence will automatically mean your child’s attendance is less than 90%.
