School Meals

At Blagdon Primary School we use Aspens Services Ltd to provide our school meal service.

Cooked meals, including a vegetarian option, are prepared daily and children are offered a choice of main courses and desserts (daily menu can be found below).  Salads and fruit are always available. Aspens provides food which meets national Food Standards Criteria.

The cost of a school meal is £2.00 a day payable in advance on ParentPay.  Meals taken are updated on ParentPay every Friday so you can keep track of your finances.  Children choose what meal they would like to order on a daily basis during morning registration. Each day can be different and they can choose to have a packed lunch from home one day and a hot school meal the next.

All meals meet the government guidelines for a nutritionally balanced diet. Each day children have a choice of a hot school meal which usually contains meat, a vegetarian option or a jacket potato. All meals are served with their choice of vegetables or salad and a piece of bread. Pudding is either a hot pudding, yoghurt or fruit salad, this changes daily,  but children choose this when they get to the lunch hall. Jugs of water are on every table and all children are encouraged to drink if they haven’t already helped themselves.

We use a band system to help the smooth running service of the lunches (Red – school dinner, Green – Vegetarian option, Yellow – Jacket Potato). This means children choose their meal in the morning and are given the appropriate coloured band for the lunch they have chosen and the dinner ladies then know what they have paid for and chosen. Particularly in Key Stage 1, we ask that you encourage your children to try a variety of meals and vegetables or salad.

If your child has any special dietary requirements please notify your child’s teacher. Should you have concerns over what or how much your child is eating please speak to their class

teacher and they will speak to the lunchtime supervisors to encourage your child. Equally, if the lunchtime staff notice that a child isn’t eating much on a regular basis then they will inform the class teacher.

Aspens Services Ltd

Autumn Menu 2017

Free school meals are available to all children in Reception, Year 1 and Year 2. They are also available to some older children according to family income.  It’s important to register for entitlement to free school meals, even if your child has a packed lunch or is in a younger class – this is so we can receive additional funding (called pupil premium) which we can use to help your child.

Children are entitled to Free School Meals if their parents, carers or guardians receive any of the following:

  • Income support
  • Income-Based Job Seeker’s Allowance
  • Income-Related Employment and Support Allowance
  • The Guarantee Element of State Pension Credit (Guarantee Credit)
  • Support under part V1 of the Immigration and Asylum Act 1999
  • Child Tax Credit, if you have an annual taxable income (as assessed by H M Revenue and Customs) which does not exceed £16,190

You can apply via North Somerset Council on their FSM website pages.

Alternatively, your child may bring a packed lunch which is eaten in the School Hall or outside in the warmer weather.  Packed lunches should be in a secure named container.  No sweets are allowed – instead, we encourage lots of fruit or vegetables.  Water is available on all tables for children who choose a packed lunch.  However, your child can bring their own drink in a non-breakable container – no fizzy drinks though please.

Change4life provides lots of ideas for eating well and getting active, including ideas for packed lunches. The new lunchbox section has lots of simple, tasty and healthy tips for hassle-free lunches.
