Personal, Social, Health & Economic Development

We address and develop the cross-curricular themes of citizenship, health and safety, personal & social education and the environment to encourage pupils to become worthwhile members of society. The themes are incorporated in our topics. Attitudes and values are also learned by good example within the school.

Children are encouraged to be sensitive to the needs and feelings of others and show respect for other cultures and beliefs. Taking turns and sharing are developed as is appropriate behaviour, including the care and concern for living things, property and the environment.

Religious Education

We offer a non-denominational Christian approach. We aim to focus pupils' attention on their moral responsibilities and their role in the world. Either Reverend Jane Chamberlain or Reverend Alex takes a weekly assembly, as does the Youth Worker for the Butcombe and Blagdon Youthwork Trust (BBYT), and sometimes the children will visit the local parish church of St. Andrew's. Parents have the right to withdraw their children from Assemblies and RE lessons.

Sex & Relations Education (SRE)

We teach a planned and progressive Sex and Relationships Education programme in KS1 and KS2 to gradually and appropriately begin to prepare our children for adult life. We teach a much wider topic on the human body and health in Class 4. We hold a meeting beforehand to give parents the opportunity to see the teaching materials we use and to hear what will be taught. Parents have the right to withdraw their children from these lessons.
